Film Festivals Take Baja California Sur
For many, many years, our desert-meets-the-sea paradise has attracted the movers, shakers and the stars of film and stage to our storied shores. But more recently, the southern tip of the Baja peninsula has also become home to TWO international film festivals, both just minutes away from the Cabo real estate we all enjoy, drawing artists, film-makers and the global community of entertainers, actors, directors and more to our area, creating a fabulous new buzz, and giving us even better reasons to bring out the klieg lights!
The larger film festival, the Los Cabos International Film Festival, aims to positively contribute to the growth of global film culture, focusing especially on Mexico, Canada and the United States while supporting their filmmakers. Likewise, it collaborates with the encouragement and profusion of cultural activities and tourism for Baja California Sur.
The LCIFF premieres several films, displays many others, and draws boldface names from across the planet. Nicole Kidman, Liam Neeson, Penelope Cruz and Reese Witherspoon, Edward Norton, Melissa Leo, Diego Luna, Gael García-Bernal, Dolores Heredia, Octavia Spencer, Virginia Madsen, Josh Lucas, Nicolás Echeverría and Matt Dillon are just some of the megawatt talents who’ve attended and been honored, as well as all of Mexico’s most outstanding talents and celebrities, including Guillermo Arriaga, Ilse Salas, Tenoch Huerta, Sofía Espinosa, Sofía Alexander Katz, Marimar Vega and Luis Ernesto Franco to name only a very few.
As every year, from November 7th to 11th, 2018, Mexican, American and Canadian strategic partners, as well as friends from throughout the world, will build a platform of cultural and commercial exchange of the film scene in the beautiful Baja California Sur backdrop. The public may attend by purchasing various ticket and pass packages in advance, to join and celebrate the festival, enjoy new works of cinema, galas and more intimate events under the stars of our magical, tropical night sky. The newer, but still brilliant Festival de Cine Todos Santos (Cinema Festival of Todos Santos) is just a short jaunt north from land’s end in Cabo, about 45 minutes, but SO worth the journey!
FCTS was founded in 2004 by Sylvia Perel, director / founder of the Latino Film Festival San Francisco, California, with a group of enthusiastic residents of Todos Santos. The FCTS provides Todos Santos and La Paz Latino artistic cinematography and education, while celebrating the local and national film culture of Mexico of merit. The festival offers a selection of the best and most recent feature films, documentaries and shorts from Latin America and Mexico.
The festival features films that express the extensive cultural background of the Latin world, honor cinematic excellence and promotes the education of young, new talent, the local cinema and film women while avoiding stereotypes, violence as entertainment and adheres to fighting domestic violence and protecting the environment.
